HardieBacker®: Plywood or performance board. Why use HardieBacker to protect your bathroom?

Josh Munro, tiler and bathroom fitter with a decade of experience, struggles to understand why anyone would choose to use plywood for bathrooms or wetrooms.

‘I have been called to jobs time and time again where plywood has failed’ Josh explains.

‘This was one of the worst I have seen. The tiles and grout were cracked and the bathroom looked terrible. The homeowner was devastated as the bathroom had only been installed a few years’ prior. When I removed the tiles the plywood substrate had almost completely eroded. What was left was black and rotten.

‘In my view, there really is no substitute for HardieBacker® tile backerboard. As a professional tiler my reputation is my livelihood and I use HardieBacker board for peace of mind. I don’t want any customer call backs and I am confident that by using a performance board like HardieBacker I won’t have any issues at all.

The bathroom in question is shown below, the first photo was taken when Josh was called out to the customer’s home in Cardiff. The second was taken once the tiles had been removed.

Final two images show the job done properly, with HardieBacker tile backer board of course!
