HardieWindbreaker™ Sheathing board

Introducing HardieWindbreaker™ sheathing board, the next generation weather defence air barrier by James Hardie.

With superior fire resistance, water-tightness and structural racking strength, HardieWindbreaker sheathing helps new builds stand the test of time.

  • A quicker build: early close-in avoids weather delays, removing the need to reschedule trades and reducing unplanned equipment hire costs. Our boards will not warp or shrink when exposed to adverse climates, and offer a guaranteed 12 months exposure during construction.
  • A simpler build: offers a complete solution for external wall racking strength and structural connectivity. Lightweight, easy to cut, flexible to handle and fix.
A more weather-tight building: provides superior weather-tightness as our water-repellant sealant stops moisture getting in; the board’s breathability allows moisture vapour to get out.
  • A stronger building: made from engineered fibre cement, adding strength to your building.
  • A quieter building: better soundproofing helps to absorb unwanted noise.
  • Made for extra high wind zones: our boards help to equalise the air pressure inside the outer wall cavity, allowing your building to stand up to extra high wind zones.
  • Guaranteed & tested for peace of mind: made from advanced material fibre cement, the boards won’t crack, warp, swell or rot, and come with a full 15 year James Hardie warranty.

HardieWindbreaker boards are 9mm thick, produced in three sizes: 1200 x 2400 mm, 1200 x 2700 mm and 1200 x 3000 mm. Our sheathing boards are suitable for both steel and timber frame constructions, and can be fixed using both screws and nails.

A range of tools and accessories are available including: HardieWindbreaker screws, sealing tape, HardieBlade saw blade, and a range of galvanized steel trims.

*Mechanical fixing to SFS frames

New building regulations means we need boards that have been tested for fire resistance in through-wall scenarios plus are A2-s1,d0. Hardie have met the requirements for both and this is why we both use and recommend this board.

Is HardieWindbreaker™ fibre cement sheathing board more moisture resistant that Gypsum Sheathing?

Generally yes, as the board is cementitious it should perform better than most gypsum based boards. However, there are a few exceptions with water repellent coatings.

In what thicknesses is HardieWindbreaker™ sheathing board available?

HardieWindbreaker™ boards are 9mm thick and available in three sheet sizes: 1200 x 2400 x 9 mm, 1200 x 2700 x 9 mm, 1200 x 3000 x 9 mm

Is HardieWindbreaker™ sheathing board more expensive than OSB or plywood boards?

Yes, as HardieWindbreaker™ board is a highly advanced weather defence board it is more expensive. However, it does not require the extra cost of a membrane which Plywood and OSB would need.

What are the main advantages of HardieWindbreaker™ sheathing board over OSB or Plywood?

HardieWindbreaker™ is an A2 non combustible board, whereas plywood and OSB are combustible materials and cannot be used in certain applications due to the new building regulations for fire safety.

HardieWindbreaker™ sheathing board has an A2, s1-d0 fire rating, is this the same as a 60/60 fire rating?

No, it is not the same. But HardieWindbreaker™ boards meet both requirements, as it is A2 non combustible and also reach a 60 minute fire rating.
